DC hotel selection has gotten complicated with all the neighborhood advice flying around. As someone who worked as a travel planner for a decade and spent countless trips navigating Washington DC’s distinct neighborhoods, I learned everything there is to know about where to stay in the capital. Today, I will share it all with you.
Dupont Circle is one of my favorite DC neighborhoods to stay in. Not too touristy, great restaurants, walkable to most things. Here’s what you need to know about the hotels.
Why Stay Here
It’s central without being in the middle of everything. The Mall and monuments are a quick Metro ride away. But you’re also in an actual neighborhood with local bars and coffee shops. That’s what makes Dupont Circle endearing to us travelers — the perfect balance between tourist access and local authenticity.
Embassy Row is nearby which is cool to walk around. The architecture is beautiful. Lots of old rowhouses and tree-lined streets. Probably should have led with this section, honestly — the neighborhood charm alone makes it worth staying here.
The Dupont Circle Hotel
Right on the circle itself. Can’t beat the location. Modern, well-designed rooms. Rooftop bar with decent views.
It’s on the pricier side but you’re paying for convenience. Walk out the door and you’re immediately somewhere interesting. That’s what makes this hotel endearing to us wanderers — zero commute to start exploring.
Kimpton Hotel Palomar
Boutique feel with good service. They do that free wine hour thing every evening which is nice after a day of walking around. The social atmosphere during wine hour makes it easy to meet other travelers.
Dog-friendly if you’re traveling with a pet. A few blocks from the Metro so not quite as convenient as the Dupont Circle Hotel but still solid. That’s what makes Kimpton endearing to us travelers — they genuinely think about the details.
The Churchill
Old school charm. Been around since the early 1900s. If you like historic hotels with character, this is it.
Walking distance to the Phillips Collection if you’re into art. Rooms are comfortable but not ultra-modern. Some people love that, some don’t. I’m in the “love it” camp — modern chain hotels all feel the same.
Budget Options
Chain hotels along Connecticut Ave. Embassy Suites, Hilton Garden Inn. Nothing special but clean and functional if you just need a place to crash. They get the job done without breaking the bank.
Things to Know
Book early if you’re coming during cherry blossom season. Everything fills up and prices spike. I learned this the hard way my first DC trip.
Sunday mornings the farmers market sets up at the circle. Great for people watching and grabbing breakfast. That’s what makes Dupont Circle endearing to us travelers — real neighborhood life happens here.
Parking is a nightmare in this neighborhood. Don’t rent a car unless you really need one. The Metro and walking cover everything you need.
The Metro station is deep underground. Like, really deep. Allow extra time getting down there. The escalator ride alone takes a couple minutes.
Overall, Dupont Circle is worth the slightly higher hotel prices. You’re in the middle of the action without being surrounded by tourists. After staying in different DC neighborhoods over the years, this remains my consistent recommendation for first-time visitors and repeat travelers alike.
