Solo Travel: Why You Should Just Do It

I was terrified before my first solo trip. Turns out it was the best thing I ever did for myself. Here’s the honest version.

The Freedom Is Real

Want to spend an entire afternoon in one cafe? Done. Want to skip the famous thing everyone says you “must see”? Skip it. No negotiating, no compromising, no waiting for anyone.

You move at your own pace. This sounds small but it changes everything.

Where to Start

Pick somewhere easy your first time. English-speaking, good transit, safe streets. London, Sydney, Tokyo. Figure out the basics before adding language barriers and sketchy infrastructure.

Or just go. I did Paris with minimal French and no plan. Figured it out. You’re more capable than you think.

The Eating Alone Thing

First solo meal feels awkward. By day three you won’t even notice. Bring something to read if you need an activity, or just sit at the bar where talking to people is natural.

How to Meet People

Hostels aren’t just for 22-year-olds. They’re the easiest way to find people when traveling alone. Common rooms, group activities, shared kitchens. Many have private rooms now if you want your own space.

Hotels work too – just make sure you do group tours or cooking classes or something. Sitting alone in a hotel room every night gets old fast.

Safety Reality

Trust your gut. If something feels wrong, leave. Share your itinerary with someone at home. Keep document copies in multiple places.

Walk with purpose even when you’re lost. Looking confused makes you a target.

The Hard Parts

You’ll get lonely. Some beautiful moment will happen and you’ll wish someone was there. Call home. Write about it. The lonely parts make the independent parts mean more.

You Should Try It

Start with a long weekend somewhere close. See how it feels. Most people get hooked.

Everyone should travel alone at least once. You learn what you actually want from travel – not what your friends want or what looks good on Instagram.
